May is Get Caught Reading Month!

Curated by Vicki Stockbridge

May is Get Caught Reading Month! A perfect time to encourage everyone to dive into a book or two (or ten or twenty). It’s also a great way, for teachers, to informally formatively benchmark all of the hard work you’ve put into reading instruction this year. The shared joy and pride of those “Aha! moments” when early readers are really starting to “get it” and established readers are confidently venturing into new territory should be on full display this month…and a good indicator of progress!

Get Caught Reading is a nationwide, year-round campaign to promote the fun of reading books for all ages. Launched in 1999 by the Association of American Publishers and now managed by Every Child a Reader, Get Caught Reading provides teachers and librarians with bulletin board-sized posters of authors, sports and media stars, and beloved book characters “caught reading” a favorite book. Check out the wide range of available fun posters.

Many sites are offering unique ideas and opportunities for students to interact and engage with books and reading.  With that, here are a couple of resources we’ve compiled to support an AWESOME Get Caught Reading Month:

ReadThinkWrite provides educators, parents, and afterschool professionals with access to the highest quality practices in reading and language arts instruction by offering the very best in free materials.

EducationWorld shares six ways your school can celebrate Get Caught Reading Month.

TeacherVision is another resource that supports the reading campaign. Check out their 1200 book discussion and teaching guides.

FamilyEducation shares more fun reading activities you can do with your kids to celebrate and cultivate a lifelong love of reading.

Let’s make reading engaging and fun to encourage more of our students to Get Caught Reading in May! Enjoy.
