Before Borders, We Danced

Curated by Julian Montoya

Calmecac Danza Group is a pre-Columbian Aztec dance collective that meets weekly on Thursdays, honoring traditions from a time before modern borders existed. Through danza, drumming, and other forms of artistic expression, they create space to connect with ancestral roots—where movement becomes prayer, ceremony, and cultural resistance rather than performance. Dancers wear vibrant regalia of feathers and shells, moving to the rhythm of the drum to honor the natural world, uplift Indigenous identity, and build community. For over a decade, this group has been part of Sacramento, continuing to carry forward these living traditions and ancestral knowledge. Check it out.
